What Steps to Take with Insurer after Auto Accident

Every 10 seconds, someone is injured in an automobile related accident. That adds up to 3 million people who are injured each year in auto accidents.

If you are one of them, you may  question how you will pay your medical bills  and what to do about your hurt and suffering.  You may also  need to know how to effectively communicate with your insurance company.

Experienced personal injury attorneys can guide you to fiscal and physical recovery.

“Your insurer has a legal obligation to provide the coverage it has promised to you,” says Oklahoma City personal injury lawyer Murry Parrish.

Parrish provides the following tips for getting back on track:

  • Take pictures at the accident scene of damage to the vehicle, the accident scene and any injuries. Swap information  any other drivers involved  and  with anyone witnessing the wreck.

  • Don’t say you are sorry for anything at the scene or you may create legal liability for what has happened.

  • Call your insurance agent as soon as possible. You may need to look over your policy beforehand so that you understand your coverage.

  • Keep detailed notes of all discussions with the insurance company.

  • Hang onto receipts of all bills  associated with pursuing  your claim or recovery.

  • Do not automatically  accept the appraisal  of your losses given to you by the insurer. Insurance companies may try to coerce you to accept their estimator’s or contractor’s repair or replacement estimates, which might be lower than reasonable.

  • Consult with an attorney prior to signing any waivers or releases, or accepting any check that says “final payment.”

  • Be aware of any limits set by your policy that could keep you from seeking legal action after a set amount of time if you are unsatisfied with your claim.
